Cedar

I’ve known Cedar almost as long as I’ve known my wife, so we’ve been friends for a long time. We actually met through gaming, so it’s been a part of our relationship since we were quite young.

Cedar has a different role-playing style than Erica. Social scenes are her favorite part of game, so I often try to include parties and social gatherings, but Cedar’s a fairly shy and passive player. She participates in scenes happily, but doesn’t initiate many of them. During those scenes, Cedar tends to respond to conversation more than begin it, and I don’t expect her to be the first to speak up.

Cedar’s sweet and kind, and her characters are almost all caretakers. She plays healers and support characters, and gets a lot of satisfaction out of it. She’s never role-played for the combat, so her characters are usually quite gentle. Cedar can certainly throw down when she has to, but she’s also played characters with practically no combat skill. Not that she’s never been outside of her comfort zone – Cedar memorably played a demoness in a game of mine who was a brutal, remorseless killer that kind of scared everyone else.

Cedar is usually invested in her romantic arcs, too. While Erica tends to stir the shit, though, Cedar’s passive style puts the ball in my court more often than not. Cedar will typically get attached to the first NPC to show an interest in her and advancing the romance is usually up to me. But Cedar and Bryan (the next player on my list) are in a relationship now and they’re trying out romantic arcs with their characters, which makes my job a lot easier. I don’t need to worry about creating a romantic NPC and all those scenes are between the two of them. I lend a hand pacing the story arc here and there, but that’s a lot less work.

For Tydalus, though – and to make me a liar – Cedar decided to play a mercenary hired out to bolster the forces of one of the lighthouses. Based on the setting information, she liked the sound of a cold, hard, Strazni warrior. For all of the kind healers Cedar plays, being a cynical badass is cathartic and she felt like playing someone with a sharp wit and a sharper sword for this game. Which is great, because I wasn’t planning on a lot of parties and social intrigue in a game of cosmic horror.

After discussing the world and setting, Cedar named her character Zoja, and decided she came from Vanhome, one of the more militaristic city-states. Vanhome’s primary exports are arms, armor, and people who know how to use them. Zoja learned to fight from one of the schools there, then set out to sell her services. Protecting a lighthouse isn’t glamorous, but the Kels pay in salt.

Cedar bought a lot of military training and combat skills, giving Zoja heavy armor, a shield, and a big sword.

No, wait… she just changed her mind and decided to go with dual axes.
